progesterone levels at 9 weeks pregnant

by jenvan, May 24, 2006 12:00AM
I am 9 weeks pregnant and have problems with my progesterone levels. Had a m/c at 6 weeks in feb. found out i was pregnant in april. my doctor tested my prog. levels and they were 16. she put me on progesterone suppositories 1 time a day. next test result after 1 week was 16.7 she then had me on 2 a day. after 1 week my levels went up to 24.2 so she put me back to 1 per day then my levels went down to 10.2. Now i am back up to 2 a day but i am so scared that i am going to lose this baby.  Can anyone offer advice or an experience to ease my mind. I don't know what to do.

Progesterone won't harm your developing baby, so if you have to err on the side of too much or too little, it's better to be taking too much.  So many things can happen in early pregnancy, if we stress about them all (which of course we do LOL) we make ourselves crazy.  I would just be sure your doctor knows you have no problem taking more than enough and would prefer to be very cautious even if it means taking extra.  Incidentally, a friend of mine had a miscarriage without progesterone, and then took it throughout her entire next pregnancy and carried to term, and then had another pregnancy without it and miscarried.  So it's effective!  Good luck.

They took my progesterone level when they were checking my HCG before I even had my first appt. It was 13.5, so they said the Dr. would probably want me to take Prometrium (it's an oral progesterone suppliment) and they wrote me a prescription. Later they called back and said that the Dr. said not to worry about taking it, but I persuaded them to say it was ok to take it if i wanted to. I was taking 3 a day and I felt dizzy/drunk all the time. I wouldn't let myself drive if i had just taken one. A week later they checked my level again and it was 336! I said, you mean 33.6 and they said NO, 336. From that point on, the nurse cut me back to once a day and i took those until they were gone (about 14.5w or so) and had an appt. 5/12 and all is well! In my mind they helped, but the reason the Dr. wasn't putting me on them in the first place is b/c they're not the end all, be all. If there is a serious problem with the pregancy, progesterone won't fix it - it just gives your body more time to fix itself. With all that said, 16+ doesn't sound bad to me, but if the Dr. allows, i'd keep taking the 2 a day (probably for piece of mind more than anything else). I think you'll be just fine! : )
