provera, clomid, and trisomy

provera, clomid, and trisomy

I have had an irregular cycle all my life. I am now 27 yrs old. Last spring I started doctoring in order to help get pregnant (we tried for over 2 years). I went on Provera a few times to get me "back on track" (I had an 88 day cycle on average). The Provera forced me to have a cycle, and next I went on Clomid. The first month didn't work; however the second month I got pregnant! Then, bad news. Our son had Trisomy 18. He was born to heaven on January 25 this year. It's been six months. My cycle is beginning to get messed up again...currently about 50 days. I've taken ovulation tests every month, etc. Nothing is happening. I need to decide if I should go on Clomid again to help us get pregnant. However, I am very nervous about that since our first long-awaited pregnancy did not go well.

-Are there any links between any of the meds I've been on and Trisomy 18?

-Should I be nervous to go back on the meds?

-Are there any other suggestions or routes I could go this time around?

I can't go through that a second time...I just can't. Any information to help me make these important decisions would be very appreciated.

I dont think so many doctors would suggest using Clomid if there was a BIG chance of something happening to the baby.  I would say your only chance of getting preggo is to go back on the Clomid.  Good luck to you and I am so sorry about your loss!!  I know it must be nerve racking but good luck!!

I was on Clomid 3 months to get pregnant and just had my quad screening last week. The results came back as negative and baby is healthy. There is no reason to think that those meds caused the trisomy 18. It was unfortunate but not due to the meds. Good Luck!!!

Thanks to all of you for the boost of confidence with your replies!

We were so excited when we found out we were pregnant...and completely devastated when it did not turn out as planned. So now, it's just so hard and nerve-racking to do it again without changing something, you know?

Anyway, I just wanted to say "THANKS!"

I just googled trisomy 18 and it said this is a very rare disease, it happens in one in 3000-5000 pregnancies.  So this was one of those rarities.  I hope this makes you feel better.  Again I am sorry for your loss.  I recentlt got preggo with Clomid too.

I was pregnant with a little girl who had trisomy 13, which is even rare than 18, I talked to the geneticists, googled every single site on the web...since losing my little girl at 13 weeks, the dr's have strongly urged us to have genetic testing, which I have had done, we are awaiting the results, my dh and I each have a healthy child by a previous marriage so it looks like horrible luck, which is probably your case too.  In our case the 13th chromosone was translocated, even rarer, I dont know about yours, to ease your mind I would have chromosone analysis done on you and your mate, but most likely it was a horrible round of bad luck, trimsomy is so very rare.  I wish you the best in your next pregnancy!
