rash on baby's cheek-caused by formula?

by gj143mc, Dec 01, 2008 02:03PM
Hello, I am concerned about a rash that my 11-week old baby has on his cheek. He had it for a long time now, but I didn't really notice it because it was small and next to his eye. Last week the doctor changed his formula from Enfamil Lipil with Iron to Enfamil AR Lipil because of constant spitting up. Now the rash has gotten a little bigger and has spread to his cheek and a little on his ear. Do you think it could be caused by the formula. I am unsure whether to keep giving him the new formula or not. At first it caused him constipation, so the doctor said we could mix a little of both formulas together. This helped relieve the constipation but now he is spitting up a lot again. I would appreciate any advice on this. Thank you.

I would take him in to his pediatrician and have the rash evaluated.  He might be allergic to cow's milk, for example, but you would think that if so, he wouldn't tolerate formula at all.  It could be a contact dermatitis from something he leans on a lot, it could be something else totally.  If your pedi doesn't know, you might ask for a referral to a pediatric dermatologist.

Thank you. I e-mailed his doctor today and she said she doesn't think it's a rash since he doesn't have it all over his body. My husband did tell me the other day that he leans a lot on the side of the cheek that he has the rash on, so that makes sense. Either way, I am going to take him to have the rash evaluated. Thanks again.

Key point: is it itchy? Eczema starts small and spreads (allergy related). It is itchy to baby.

Teething can cause spittle rash but just right near where they are always drooly.
The formula issues sounds like a nightmare, sorry, no suggestions.

The MD told us "atopic dermatitis" for almost 15 mos. until one day I happened to get a different doctor who asked "Why haven't you had that food allergy diagnosed yet?" and proceeded to order tests. Dairy and grains were primary culprits (there were others). Rash went away only when he gave up eating the allergenic foods.
