could be fifth disease, just a virus. Are his cheecks bright red? looking like hes been slapped.. then it could be that. If not the benadryl won't hurt him but will help with the itching, if he itches.. it usually just runs it course and is more contagious to pregnant women in their first trimester.. so please be careful..
Both my boys would get a rash after they had fevers, the doc told me not to worry bout it it would go away that it was just from having a fever(like heat rash)
like the others said, lots of viral infections end with a rash. i suspect fifths. if he has been around anyone who is pregnant i would take him to the ped for a diagnosis just so you could warn them. it can be dangerous for pregnant women. it's also miserable for any adult to get it so hopefully you had it as a child. otherwise, you can probably let him go a bit or just call the dr for a consultation.
oh yea- if he goes to daycare, i would get a diagnosis as well just so you can give the center a heads up. if we had fifths go around we would take extra precautions in sanitizing and close certain areas such as the sand and water tables.
Gosh, thanks Ladies. I know I read that rash after fever may be "6th's" "roseola" but "fifths" has the red smack cheek look. My sister is 6 weeks preggo coming for a play date tomorrow, I will keep her informed!
Actually after reading about 5th's, I believe he has the "roseola" instead. Thanks for the heads up though. I think if he still has it tomorrow afternoon I will take him in anyways :)

i have seen children diagnosed with fifths who only had the the rash on their torso.
your sister would be in the clear since the rash appears after the child is no longer contagious. the only concern would be if someone else in family has it. a lot of these illnesses present only minor and often unnoticable symptoms while the person is still contagious. i would errr on the side of caution. i know someone who almost lost her life and her baby's because she got fifths while pregnant, although she was later in the pregnancy.
