recurrent pneumonia in toddler

recurrent pneumonia in toddler

My child was told to go for a chest x ray a year ago when we brought her to dr when she was sick came back she had phneumonia now less than year later she has it again. She just turned 3.  She has the severe cough. mild fever.  Does not appear she has Ashthma or allergies to us. or any family history of anything that would cause phneumonia.  What do you think it could be.  Why would she get it twice in a year? IS this unusual? what is my next step- she is taking zythromax as prescribed.  Should I be concerned and what tests should I do - should I have her get the prevnar vaccine I read about?  She had flu shot already few weeks back?  PLease help me I am a nervous wreck

Is she in daycare? If so she's surrounded by kids and germs and can easily pick up others' colds, viruses, etc. Some kids (like when I was younger) tend to have colds, etc move into their chest. I always ended up w/bronchitis or pneumonia after the 'stuffy nose' part of the cold. Thankfully, I basically grew out of it,though even as an adult I get a cough w/every cold. I'm sure it's pretty normal for her.

thank you - you have both been wonderful - if you can think of anything I should check into please let me know or if anything that could make it recurrent phneumonia that I should ask my dr about please let me know.

My daughter had pneumonia last year that got so serve that she ended up in ICU for 6 days and then had surgery to take out the fluid and pus that was pressing on her lung in the plureal space.  I am petrified of pneumonia.  I have seen what it can do.  Stay on top of your doctor and continue to get an x-ray to make sure your child is improving.  Antibiotics should heal the pneumonia.  My daughter was 15 months old and had a flu shot.  She developed the flu (we had an actual flu test and she tested positive)...low grade fever...and 2 days later ended up with pneumonia, which is secondary condition due to the flu. Pneumonia can also develop from RSV as well as Influenza.  Best of luck.  I hope everything clears up soon.

yes she got a flu shot about a week before this.  I will make sure to follow up.  Do you think its usual that she has it again though being she had it last year?  How long should I keep her indoors and out of preschool?  She still has her severe cough but her 5 day xythromas medicine last day of medicine dosage is today?
