saviour stitch at 19+5 weeks! my cervix shortened to 2.6cm

by hopefull_mummy, Jun 29, 2009 04:18PM
i am now 20 weeks pregnant with a much wanted baby boy, as i lost my son last year, he was born at 25+4 weeks and lived for 30 minutes. the reason for my pre-term labour was because i had an infection in my uterus (choriomnitits) also unknown to me and dr's i had an incompetent cervix, no stitch was put in. i recently had my 20weeks anomoly scan and cervical scan to find my cervix had shortned to 2.6cm from 4.8cm two weeks ago. my consultant decided to put in a saviour stitch, it went better than planned as my cervix hadnt shortned any more due to a few days bedrest. i was just wondering has anyone ever been in this situation or similar? will it work?? as i am really worried with me only being 20 weeks that i'll give birth before 24 weeks and i'll loose my baby.
i am going out of my mind here, i am still on bedrest trying to do what ever it takes to keep this baby in for as long as possible! the stitch was put in 48 hours ago now....please advise me!!??? xxx

I also have a cerclage.. mine was put in at 18wks because I was 4 cm dilated.  It has been almost 8wks since the stitch was put in.

I don't remember the exact numbers, but when mine was put in I did a lot of reading about it, and the fact that yours was put in before you started dilating means your chances of making it to 37wks are very good...

even with i stitch in my cervix is only 1cm thick, so you are doing relly good.

try to stay on bed rest for as long as you can.  the longer you can keep that baby in there, they better his chances are...

best of luck to you!!

Oh I wanted to tell you another thing.. a girl I work with lost her baby due to IC.  The next pregnancy, she had a cerclage put and carried all the way to her due date.  They ended up having to induce her.

I was hoping Tank would see this!

I've never heard of it being called a savior stitch.  Here, its called a cerclage.

Thank you for the replies, its so reassuring to know other positive stories.
Also does anyone know if there are any symptoms that should follow the stitch, ive had no pain (which is good) the odd few spots of blood streaked discharge were only in first 24 hours (which is also good) but yesterday i seemed to have a more sticky, stringy, thick discharge, it was very slightly blood streaked. i was just worrying that this was the mucus plug/show coming away from i my cervix?? is this normal, t seems to have calmed down now but im worrying about everything! im still on bedrest, and not left the house or lifted a finger since the Cerclage was done 3 days ago.
I am determined to stay positive and hopeful and hopefully have a lovely newbaby by the end of the year! xx
p.s...good luck to you also im so glad yours has worked too xxx

I had the exact same thing... the first couple of days I had some blood mixed in my discharge but not a whole lot...  they I started have A LOT of mucus discharge just like a mucus plug and there was more blood mixed in it.. Still not red.. more mauve.. but there was a lot of the mucus.. I called my dr and he said it was normal as long as there wasn't a bunch of bright red blood and/or cramping.. it stopped after a couple of days...

Best of luck to you!!

brilliant, thank you for the reply thats made me feel so much better! did you ever get any twinges? i felt the baby wriggling before, quite low down and maybe it just caused a few twinges down below, im in no pain, no tightenings etc. the mucus loss has also stopped now too, it had slight brownish streaks through it, was yours the same. im worring about all sorts...as you can tell! i have a 3 year old llittle girl, she's at nursey most days which is lucky so i can bedrest, how long did you bedrest for? do i literally not lift a finger or walk anywhere etc??
thanks again for reply xx

I'm not sure what you mean by twinges.. I quite often feel the baby tap dancing on my cervix and that always freaks me out.. maybe that was what you felt..  I'm further a long so my kicks are a lot stronger but in the beginning I can see where you might call them twinges..

yeah there was blood in my mucus too.. not brown but more like maroon or mauve.. brown blood is usually okay because that means it is old blood...

I have a 16 month old son also so makes bed rest very difficult.. he is in daycare during the day, but when he is home it is very difficult for me to resist caring for him and being involved in what he is doing.. it is hard... i miss being his mommy so much.. of course I still am, but not in the same way i was before..

I have been on strict bed rest for 8wks.. which means only getting up to go to the bathroom and take a shower.. of course for 8wks i'm not able to stick to that 100% but I try my best...  I will probably be on strict bed rest the rest of my pg, but my situation is much worse than yours.. I was 4cm dilated which is very very bad.. almost too late for a cerclage.. even now with the cerclage my cervix is closed but only 1cm thick...

The friend that I worked she never had to go on bed rest.. so I think it just depends on how your cervix is doing with the cerclage..

the twinges i felt before, were almost as if the stitches were being pulled slightly, i felt it as i was walking upstairs to the bathroom. maybe the stitches are settling in?? nothings come of it, no more 'twinges' no bleeding, mucus or pain. which is re-assuring. i have a scan on friday to see how my cervix is doing, hoping for an improvement or at least no change! my womb is at the same height as my belly-button at the moment, as expected at 20 weeks.so i usually feel little kicks and flutters either side, depending on whcih way baby is lying. today i felt small flutters and movement further down so im guessing he was lead in a totally different position, maybe that put a small amount of pressure on my cervix and caused the 'twinges' i felt.
thanks for  the reply again, much apprechaited x

Hey hun I hope you read this. I have had my cerclage since 14wks I'm 30wks now. It always goes up and down with length. Once it's was 1.36 one week and without bed rest 5.2 the next week. I funnel down to the cerclage but some weeks it doesn't change. so don't worry too much until you are down to the stitch with pain and bleeding. Other than that you should be fine. feeling your cerclage is normal. I still feel mine. I even feel the baby kick my cervix. It's all normal. I have heard that most women with a cerclage end up being induced b/c baby doesn't come and cervix stays the same length. So good Luck
