sore nipples after 3 months

by ctsmom, Sep 03, 2007 06:55PM
My dd is almost three months, and breastfeeding is going well, my nipples were fine.  Now all of a sudden for the last 3 days they are so sore, I thought the discomfort was only in the beginning/?  does it come and go until I stop bfing?

Pregnant again?

It depends on how baby is latching and if perhaps they are irritated.  Get some good cream and you should find some relief.

I thought the chances of pregnancy were low as I am still nursing and have not had a period

I was watching her nursing and think maybe she is biting, how do I get her to stop?

btw I will take a test to rule that out too.

Your chances of getting pregnant are low, but it's not 100% proof that you won't. Don't know what to tell you about her biting.

I noticed my nipples would become chaffed during growth spurts when my baby would nurse more frequently. Also they do start to "bite" early one. I noticed mine owuld do that when they werre distracted or bored with nursing. If you notice the biting behavior, draw attention back to nursing, play with her hands, stroke her cheek, etc.

If you haven't already, invest in a small tube of lanisoh, that may help with the chaffing pain.

I read that if you suddenly develop sore nipples after weeks or months of successful feeding, it is usually thrush (a kind of yeast infection).  Apparenly, according to "The Nursing Mother's Companion", by Kathleen Huggins, R.N., M.S.,  a book which you should all get if you don't have it, when you have symptoms like shiny, reddened, swollen, tender, and cracked nipples and it develops after months of feeding successfully it is usually thrush.  If it is thrush the baby will have some white patches inside his/her cheeks.  You will both need to get on antibiotics if you have it, and then it will clear up after around 14 days of treatment (according to this book).

If I remember my days of sex ed, breastfeeding doesn't really reduce the risk of pregnancy, however the lactation hormones can play a little with ovulation.  True or false?
