steroids/obesity

by smoshe, Nov 18, 2004 12:00AM
My son had respiratory problems has as a baby and infant.  he was on antiobiotics and mega doses of Decadron for the first 5 to 6 years of life.  He had his adenoids (adenoids) removed at 9 months.  Tonsils removed at age 8 and 4 sets of tubes over his life time.  He is now 10.  However he is 100 lbs.  I am wondering if the steroid use is causing his obesity.  No one in our family is obese.  He is very active and watches what he eats.  In the last couple years the weight has been going up and up.  He is no longer on antiobiotics or steroids.  Is the obesity due to this use of steroids and antibiotics as a young baby?  What can I do to help him lose weight?

my nephew is 11 and weighs 100lbs and he is no where near obese...so i must assume that your son is very short for his age.
the steroids will give them a more dense appearance but i would talk to your pedi about your concerns.  they would have his growth charted throughout the years, they would also be able to refer you to a nutritionalist that can help you plan a course of action to help him shed any extra pounds slowly, naturaly and healthy.

I know most steriods make you gain more weight when you are one them.(I have asthma and from time to time am on steriods and hate looking so bloated) I am not sure if they affect your weight afterwards. I noticed my weight always got better after I got off them, so I am not sure what to tell you. You should talk to your doctor about it.

I am asking a new question and it wont let me open a new forum for today.  Anyway, do any of you know where to get maternity clothes for women 5'9 or taller?  I bought large pants for the length, and they will hardly even stay above my rear.  I need some medium that are for tall girls!  Help!  I looked on Old Navy, but nothing showed the longs available.  Thanks!

Go to Landsend.com.  Or you can go to a Google search and type in maturnity clothes for tall girls or something along those lines and see what it pulls up.  Lands End though had something for talls.   Good Luck I hope you find what you are needing.  Also try Motherhood or Mothertime they may have something.

I am almost 5'11 and I just found the most wonderful jeans at Target. They are by Liz Lange and do not have the funky panel in the front. They have elastic in the back with 2 adjusting buttons. I love them. They go below your belly. Good Luck! Danielle

Try JCPenney, they had alot in maternity talls.  I'm only 5'6 but I end up buying talls since my inseam is 32".  They also have these great adjustable waist pants. I have them, they're awesome.

what ever you do...if you find pants that actually fit the way they are supposed to (length wise)  DON'T LET DH DO LAUNDRY!!!

my mom found a pair of slacks for me...i was so excited not only were they long enough but she found them on a clearance rack.  i got to wear them one time...then dh, trying to be nice(which i appreciate) washed and dried the pants....they shank i swear 3 to 4 inches...so of course if i wear them now i look like i'm wearing high waters.
