strep b

I went for a coil check today and was told that i was a strep b carrier and was put on antibiotics. My baby is 6 mths old now. When she was born for the first 3 days she was very listless, wouldnt feed and lost almost a lb in weight. She was jerky at times and the midwife was quiet concerned. Then she seemed to pick up and although has had alot of trouble gaining weight is a happy cheerful little girl.

Does anyone know anything about strep b and do they think its possible that that was what was wrong with her and if so is she ok now? They wouldnt have told me if i hadnt gone in for my checkup and asked alot of quests - the nurse assumed i'd already had the meds and knew all about it - that the doc had talked to me but she hadnt- and then tried to fob me off saying it wasnt important.

From reading up on it - Apparently it is very important if i get pregnant again :)

i had it when i was preg. with my dd. but got the full doses of meds before she was delievered.   if you are that dissapointed with your drs and nurses get new ones. good luck on you and your baby.

Antibiotics wont do much for strep b in the long run - it is highly likely the bacteria will recolonize shortly after antibiotics are ceased.  Typically, a pregnant women is tested for step b during the later stages of pregnancy and anyone that tests positive for strep b is given IV antibiotics DURING labor to prevent transmission to baby.  If step b is transmitted to baby during delivery, life-treating conditions can result so taking the appropriate preventative measures are clearly important.  Here is a short article on this:
