Around here, the test you aand your spouse for fertilization and than determine if you are candidates. I would just call one of your fertility specialist to find out what they do there.

I'm confused. You don't want anymore kids, but you want your friend to be a surrogate for you? You wanta a kid, but you just don't want to carry it?

You would have to pay for all of your expenses and all of your friend's medical expenses related to the surrogacy.  The process is not cheap and the medicines to coordinate your cycles and create the eggs and prepare the surrogate to receive the eggs in coordination with your cycle and all are very expensive by themselves, much less the medical costs (i.e., doctor fees).  It can run to $15,000 (total) around here but I do not know what the cost is in Florida.  You should also have a legal agreement between the two of you, and you would need to pay for your lawyer and her lawyer.  Reputable clinics also request that you and she each have a consult with a psychiatrist or family counselor, so they know things won't blow up later.  You would pay for both of these appointments too.   The kind of doctor who does surrogacy work would be a specialist in a fertility clinic that also has an endocronologist working with it.

I second everything Annie has said with the inclusion that in Australia you have to be in solid married relationships...now who governs this here are counselors and people in such professions.  Needless to say same sex couples are not granted exceptance for such procedures..yet.  Not that I am labelling you AT ALL....just thought I would add as that is a definate weighing factor or approval ratings here in OZ.  Other thing frowned upon are having friends step up to the plate for you...they maybe will but the dr's may not be so will to involve them and prefer you have a complete stranger....those are some things I have heard.

best of luck with your decision.

I agree with Annie - but I also live in Florida.  When I went to a Fertility Health Fair in April this year, I was under the impression from people there and things I have read that the true cost of a surogate from start to finish is pushing $70k!  You could adopt twice for that price!!  I assume if you have a surogate you know it would be less expensive as you could work something out privately and not have to pay as much in attorney and/or agency fees.  I would suggest starting with an RE and finding out what it entails and getting recommendation for an agency to use to help facilitate things.

As jenny said, it can get really expensive if you are also paying the surrogate.  I was naming the costs if you have someone who is willing to do it without a fee for herself.  Around here, surrogates who do it for pay get about $20,000, and then there are the legal and agency fees and psychatrist and doctor costs and drugs and insurance, on top of that.  So the $15K I mentioned goes up to $35K really fast if you hire a surrogate, and it's probably more by now (my figures are about 2 years ago).
