thrush on breast?

by ts13, Jun 15, 2007 12:00AM
my daughter was born in feb. and i have been dealing with thrush in her mouth and on my breast for 4 months now. i (and she) was treated with everything...... diflucan, nystatin, GV, creams, bleached everything, replaced breast pump accessories, etc. etc. anyway, she has been thrush free for a couple weeks now and i thought i was cured, too. however, i have had a little peeling on my areola-but only on the right side. i also get shooting pains and throbbing. today my skin from my areola out 1 "all around was pure white-not really flesh colored. i went to my ob and saw the nurse. she didn't have answers for me except to try another round of diflucan.
has anyone else ever dealt with anything like this?? i am not convinced it's thrush anymore because i only have it on one breast and my baby is clear.
im not sure as to what my next step should be. any suggestions??

i dealt with thrush for a few months and i know how frustrating it is, my dd couldnt get rid of it it seemed, i thought i had it on my breast as well, because it was extremly painful, i had it checked out and i had a clogged duct, i had the shooting pains also, and a white bump on the end of my nipple, have you tried warm compresses? also, if it is a clogged duct, a hot shower helps, just run the water over the area for a while, mine took a few weeks to clear up and it sort of "popped" and then i felt much better, but you can develop an infection, so if this doesnt help that could be the case, your doctor didnt mention anything else it could be?

hope you feel better

Use Gentian Violet...its a purple liquid that goes in babys mouth. Dip a q-tip and let baby suck on it for a few seconds before nursing. When baby nurses it will treat ur nipples. If at the end of the feeding u dont have 2 purple nipples u can apply it directly to the nipple. It will make babys whole mouth purple but that will go away. Apply vaseline to the lips before treating to keep from staining lips. This stuff can be messy but it works! It WILL stain clothes so be sure baby wears something old or already stained. You may want to nurse naked from the waist up for the duration of treatment. Use it for 3-4 days and take a break as it does contain a small amount of alcohol and can start to irriate nipples. Once a day should do the trick. I like doing it at night. The first round should do the trick. Wash everything with vinager =)

I would say it is absolutely still thrush!  I know EXACTLY what you are going through....I battled thrush for over 4 months and did everything you said..boiled stuff, washed everything in bleach, GV, Diflucan, Nystatin, and mine STILL never went away!  It is such a pain in the a**!  Thrush is a strange thing and yes it can get better, almost to the point of being gone, and then flare up again!  I would agree that you should do another round of medicine from your doctor for both you and the baby and keep washing/sterilizing everything!  And...keep doing it for awhile after it finally clears up so it won't return!  I have no good advice for you b/c I never actually found a cure.  I suffered for over 4 months and then my son turned one and I just gave in and quit nursing.  It was so painful for me, both the thrush and having to give up nursing, but it is what was best in my situation.  I AM NOT telling you to quit nursing, I'm just saying to stay vigilant with your medicine and sterilizing/washing and hopefully you will have better luck than I did!  Good Luck!

It may sound a little lame after you have had all the medicines and so forth, but I have used a white vinegar and water solution with good results, a spoonful of vinegar in a cup of warm water, then put it in a bowl and lean the breast into it for a while.  It feels soothing, and seems to calm thrush.
