tooth extraction while pregnant

by nikkisix3, Aug 19, 2007 09:46AM
I am one week away from my due date, August 25th. I am in terrible pain with a tooth that I am supposed to have taken out in mid Sept. I don't want to be distracted with the pain in my mouth while I'm supposed to be enjoying this delivery. The pain is severe, and I'm on penicillin, and taking tylenol. I don't want to over do it with the tylenol, and I only take the full dosage when I feel like the pain is just too much to bare, following all other guidleines as well.
I just feel like if I get this tooth extracted, it could start labor, and i don't want to have a swollen jaw and open tooth socket while trying to be so happy about the labor and delivery of our 4th child.
Needing some advise on what to do and how to cope. This is all I have been thinking about for the past couple days...and yes I''m still in pain.

It is safe to take Codeine during pregnancy.  If your just taking plain old Tylenol, of course you would be feeling pain.....it is like eating M&M's for a toothache, or anything else for that matter.  Discuss w/you dr. about getting the tooth extracted.  Getting one tooth pulled is very temporary pain and swelling.  If your already on antibiotics, this should be able to be done relatively soon.

I work in a dental office and from what I have seen and what I reccomend I would not get your tooth extracted since you are one week away.  Most dentists, at least a good one wouldn't do it anyway.  Do do the fact of the anethesia and you being pregnant and so far along.  If it is really that unbearable I would first talked to your OB, but as I mentioned before you are too close to your due date, so the risks of being under anethesia and pregnant is not worth it to your baby.  Hope this helps!
