update on my baby

by gj143mc, Nov 24, 2008 11:34PM
Hello everyone, I just came back from taking my baby to the doctor. It was a long day, it took over 6 hours. I took him to the clinic first to see why he had lost consciousness yesterday and the doctor said she thinks it might be reflux. She asked me if the baby spits up a lot, and I told her yes. He spits up all the time, and sometimes he throws up. She said that sometimes the acid that goes back up causes the baby to stop breathing for a few seconds. She explained to me why but I don't really remember the details. She switched his formula to Enfamil AR to control the spit up. She said that the reason he became unresponsive could have also been caused by other things, but she thought the reflux was most likely the one. So she sent me to the main hospital about 30 minutes away to get an  esaphogram (sp?) to check if he does have reflux. So my husband and I drove over there and they did the x-ray. The radiologist said that he didn't see signs of reflux so he sent me to urgent care to talk to a pediatrician, which was a waste of time since they made us wait for almost 2 hours just to tell me what the radiologist had already told me. Well, when we got home from the hospital, I tried giving my baby his new formula but he did not like it. He was crying so hard and he did not want to take it so I am just giving him his regular formula and he is doing fine. The doctor also told me to give him 4 oz. every 3 hours. I was previously giving  him 5 oz every 3-4 hours and she said that was too much. Well, tomorrow I have a doctor appointment with my baby's regular doctor (the one I saw today was not his doctor) so I will talk to her further about this. Thank you all for help.

Sounds like they knew what they were talking about - the originally brought reflux up to me too.  My daughter never spit up though.  They did treat her for reflux just like your son - just to be safe until she gets older.

Did they say anything about asthma?

Good Luck and praying this never happens to you again.

It did sound like they knew what they were doing. The thing I am concerned about is that since he doesn't have reflux, I still don't know what could have happened. They did not mention anything about asthma. They are not treating him for reflux since he doesn't have it. I wonder why he spits up so much then. Even now that I have reduced the oz I give him, he still spits up. Well, thank you so much for your replies. I am really praying that this doesn't happen again. Hopefully it was just a one time thing.
