vicodin during pregnancy

by kyliesmommy, Dec 15, 2007 12:06AM
I am 39 weeks pregnant and like most women have suffered from back pain and migraines throughout much of my pregnancy. I have had 2 obs due to a recent move, they have both perscribed me vicodin. My current doctor subscribed me another refill on my current perscription of vicodin last week 38 weeks. I am going to be induced next week. Myquestion is what are the effects that my baby could have. I am so worried that something will happen to my baby. But everytime i talk to my doctor he says it will be fine. I take no more then 3 a day and am trying to taper off of them slowly since my body is use to taking them. any helpful answers would be great. This is my first baby. Oh and I have tried taking tylenol it didnt even touch the pain thats why i got perscribed with vicodin

i am trying to find out the same thing. i am 36 weeks and have taken it since before i was pregnant for hip and knee arthritis. i take 20 mg a day. today, i havent taken any. not since 2:00 am friday morning. i am really trying not to because i am worried about withdrawal in the baby, but i can barely walk. ive spent the day either on my side in bed or sitting on a bed pillow on the couch. tylenol doesnt help me either, neither does motrin unless i take 800 mg's and even then it only helps to an extent. to make it worse, the weather is bad where i live, snow moving in later today, and hell i can feel it building in my legs.
i have the option to deliver anytime on/after the 21st of this month, but i am worried about how the baby will be. someone said something somehwere about seizures? i would never forgive myself if she suffered with those. i want to know if by not taking anything for the next week, will she still be at risk for that when she is born? what is the lesser ofthe two evils?

I would trust the Dr.  I can say I was in a lot of pain at the end and on my feet all day.  My Dr. just told me Tylenol, but she's pretty tough and I guess I never asked for anything else.  She also sent me home on Ibuprofen after baby both times, and they were big boys.  Each Dr. is different, but I have seen  lots of pregnant gals take it and have no problems.  Stay away from Motrin though unless your Dr. tells you it's okay, it's a no-no especially in the last trimester.

Crriter is right you wouldnt want to take motrin that is one thing that they want you to stay away from. I would try taking a half a one. I took a 1/2 of vicodin this morning and im just trying to stay off my feet and relaxing so i dont need to take more. BUt I agree i am so worried  about harming my baby. I have looked into it more and i have found lots of websites that have said where ladies have taken vicodin, percocet even oxycodone for pain while pregnant. I would take the option to deliver before xmas the pain only gets worse as you get further along...thanks for the help and good luck with your baby

Just take as little as you can get by with.

Here is my story.....I delivered my baby on Friday, December 14th and she is absolutely beautiful and perfect. I have been taking vicodin for this whole pregnancy with her. I have 4 herniated discs in my back, 3 torn discs and degenerative discs disorder also so I am in constant pain everyday. Like I said....I just had my baby on Friday and she is not going through any withdraws or anything. She is absolutely perfect. Trust your OB, they would not prescribe something to you that you are not suppose to take. BUT please make sure that you are only taking the recommended dose..NO MORE! Also, stopping cold turkey is a BIG NO NO. It would stress out your baby. You would rather your baby be born addicted and go through withdraw outside of the womb where he/she can be cared for than inside where she is stressed out and you don't know what is going on with her.
I hope this has helped you a little. Please feel free to contact me if you have any questions......good luck to you!!!

Thank You so much!!! I am perscribed to only take one a day but it was not working so i tried taking more up to 3 a day. I told my doctor so that he was aware of it, I too have been taking it all pregnancy I am due to get induce this saturday. I am just so worried that something will be wrong with her and i would feel so guilty. Thank you for your reply though it helps alot. I am trying to just take a 1/2 a pill a day this week to wean myself off of it. Congrats on your baby girl, I cant wait to see my lil princess this weekend
