weight gain UGH!

by gonza, Jan 04, 2005 12:00AM
How much weight have you ladies gained (or gained in the past)during pregnancy?  I am so worried that I will gain too much.  I have already gained what i feel is enough and I am only 26 weeks.  Also, do you think there is any relation between how much my mother gained during pregnancy and how much I will gain?

I gained almost 50 with my first.  At my last appt I was 22W 5D and I had gained 18 lbs so far.

i am 21w 2 days and have gained 11 pounds so far. i dont know if this is normal or not, but the dr said i was fine. i feel like ive gained a ton because everyone says im huge.

by gonza, Jan 04, 2005 12:00AM
Well, I have gained 30 so far.  I swear that I am not eating more and I have continued to exercise.  I know my ob doesnt believe me, but it is true.  She says that if you didnt eat 3 meals a day and eat healthy before you get pregnant then you tend to gain more because of the metabolism slowing down even more.  I admit that I have never been a healthy eater, but this is obsurd!  I feel like someone is playing a cruel joke and laughing loudly everytime I gain one more pound.  I know I just want a healthy baby, but I just wonder if 12 weeks is enough to lose the extra weight?  I would hate to come back to work and still look pregnant.

i am 39 weeks and i have gained 30 lbs.....with my son i gained 37 lbs total and to tell you the truth with both of my pregnancies i was over weight to begin with.  however, by the end of the first week after my son was born i had already dropped 20 of the lbs i gained.  so don't worry about loosing it afterwards....granted i wouldn't run out and eat a truck load of ice cream now but continuing to exercise will help you out a lot later.

With my first I gained 30 lbs.  With my second I gained 15 or 7 however you want to look at it.  I weighed 218 when I got pg and was sick and lost 9 lbs so I was down to 209.  By the time I ended my pg I was 225 so I gained back the weight I lost and only gained about 7 more lbs.  I asked my dr if that was ok and they said since I was heavier to begin with that weight gain was ok for me.  Now with my first it took a while to start gaining and the dr kept telling me I needed to start gaining.  I think 30 - 40 pounds is the norm in a healthy pg.  I think as long as the dr is not concerned and you and the baby are doing well then I would not worry about it too much.  Just remember if you are gaining because of a lot of junk food (that is what I did with my first) it may be harder to take off once baby is here.  Good luck and take care.

I'm now 36 weeks and go for my next appointment on Friday, at my last appointment i had put on 34.5lbs. This is my first pregnancy and i was hoping not to gain this much, but the Dr sais that i'm doing well as is the baby. He thinks that the baby will be around 6-7lbs when he/she is born, but i've heard that they could be off by a pound either way. How are you doing?

As far as the baby and all everything is fine.  The doctor is not concerned.  She says everything is fine and justs laughs.  I have never been heavy.  I am five foot 9 inches and this is by far the heaviest i have ever been.  I weighed 130 when i got pregnant.  I think all this extra is just killing me.  I am hoping that breastfeeding and exercise will do the trick.  And yes, i am sure it is junk food, but that is all I ate before I got pregnant!  I have tried to do better like adding bananas and apples and fruit to my diet.  I have managed to avoid ice cream and cookies and stuff.  What kills me is pizza and chips and stuff.  UGH!!!!

I agree with you on the weight thing, i have never been this heavy in my life. I'm 5'4 and before i got pregnant i weighed 110lbs, i had been that weight since i was in grade 10. So putting on 34.5lbs is killing me, but i just think to myself that it's all for the good of the baby. I to hope that i will lose some of the weight when i breastfeed, i've heard it's the best way to lose some of the weight that you put on.

I am also pretty small pre-pregnancy.  I am 5'6 and weigh 115lbs. My dr told me that if you are smaller your body NEEDS and DOES gain a little extra. You probably gained it in your belly, hips and thighs, and probably after the 1st trimester. My dr told me I needed it in my thighs or my legs could never support my belly ! :)
BTW- I gained almost 50 with my first and within 3 months I was smaller than pre-pregnancy size. I didn't breastfeed, I just watched what I ate.  Gave birth in Sept and by Christmas I was a size 0.  I'm hoping to give birth in April and be back down to normal by summer !

Your right about where the weight has gone, i have noticed alot of it is in my tummy. I think i only put a little on in my hips, thanks for your info on your weight gain and loss. Makes me feel better that you can lose most of it if you try, my little one is due in 4 weeks so i'm going to try to be at my pre-pregnancy weight by summer.

I am also due in April, the 14th.  I also hope to be down to my pre-preggo size by summer.  When in April are you due and are you having a boy or girl?  We are having a little boy!!

I am due April 23rd, little boy, and I have gained 17 pounds. BUT.....I was a couple of months before I went so it is probably more like 20. I think everyone is different. I gained alot with my last one but right after I had him a week later I could get into my clothes. It amazed me! I too am 5'9 so think being tall made it easier. Do not fret to much over it:) Danielle

Thank you all so much.  I still dont want to be gaining so much, but your comments have eased my mind.  Like I said, at least i will have 12 weeks at home to work the fat off!!! :)

by andileigh, Jan 04, 2005 12:00AM
I asked my OB about the "gaining like mom did" question.  He told me that how your mom gained is often a good indication of what you will do.  For me it has been identical.

I was gaining really slowly I had only gained maybe 9 pounds by the time I had reached 5 months...then in two weeks i gained 13 pounds.  It was all water from swelling but that weight doesn't go away :o(...I continued to gain a pound a week after that point.  I am 33 weeks today and have put on about 45pounds.

You all talk about feeling huge.  There are four of us at work who are pregnant.  Actually, one had her baby today so I guess there is just three now.  I am bigger than ALL of them and I'm the last one due.  None of us are happy with our weight gain, you are not alone!

I hope that i don't take after my mom on the weight gain thing, my mom put on 80lbs each with my sister and I. She did lose it all, but i don't want to put that much on. I think i would die if i did, so far so good though.

by tura, Jan 04, 2005 12:00AM
I am with all of you on the weight issue.  I was sick in the beginning of my pregnancy and lost about 18 pounds, at my last appt I had gained 5 pounds back and I am so scared to go to my next appt.  I know that I've gained alot this past 4 weeks, I wouldn't be surprized if I've gained another 10 pounds!!  I am trying so hard to stay away from the junk food, but that is all I crave.  That and milk.  I swear I go through like a gallon every 2 days.

by dawnna, Jan 04, 2005 12:00AM
I will be 32 wks tomorrow and so far i have gained 20 pounds.

by mgi, Jan 04, 2005 12:00AM
my first one I gained 52 pounds. I lost it all within several months with only excercise (not watching what I ate)  but I remember cominghome from the hospital and feeling as big as when I went in to deliver.  This last pregnancy I weighed more to start  (105)  and I gained 11 pounds in the first 10 weeks  (they told me not to excercise but I ate well)  her I am nearly two months post miscarriage and I am crused that I still have 8 more to lose.  I am so frustrated I want to lose it before I try again so I have  a "clean slate"  especially if tehy tell me not to excercise again!  By the way - I nor my sisters gained like our mom.  She had 12 kids and said she always left teh hospital in normal street clothes?

by livelysue, Jan 05, 2005 12:00AM
I was on a diet for my whole pregnancy.  The doctor did not want me to gain anymore than 25 pounds and I had gained 10 pounds in the first three months.  I ended up gaining 35 pounds before I delivered.  I had to watch everything I ate so no pigging out for me which was good because that meant I have less to lose as I was already 30 pounds overweight when I got pregnant.

IF you eat healthy and follow what the doctors tell you, you will be fine.

by mel8, Jan 06, 2005 12:00AM
I put on 33lbs.  My doctor kept saying that I was putting more on than I was meant to be and I would never get rid of it after I have my baby.   Now nearly 8 weeks after baby was born I am back to my original weight.  I had an emergency c section birth so I have been unable to do much excercise to get rid of excess weight, I put it all down to breast feeding.
