weight gain and baby birth weight

by momm2b, Aug 16, 2006 12:00AM
does the amount of weight you gain reflect directly with how much your baby will weigh? has anyone gained a lot and had a small baby or gained nothing and had a big baby? I am just curious if when people say keep eating so much and baby will be a giant if its true. Thanks.

i agree with the other posters. from what i've heard, the amount of weight you gain does not reflect on the weight of the baby. for example, my aunt gained a whopping 50 pounds and her little girl was 7 lbs. and my mother gained about 20 or so with my younger brother and he was huuuge, like 9 lbs. or something. hope this helps! <3

Quick question if you do not mind.
When do you start seeing the OB every 2 weeks and then when is it once a week????

by Crritter, Aug 16, 2006 12:00AM
WIth my son I gained 23 lbs. and he was over 10 lbs. at birth.  Have a firend who gained over 50 lbs. and her son was 8 lbs. at birth.  I don't think it really affects the baby weight so much, unless you are diabetic, then maybe if you are taking in lots of sugar that can cause you both to gain.  I wouldn't stress too much over the weight, you need reserves to care for your b aby, and if you nurse you will need those calories.

My mom gained 80 pounds when she was pregnant with me and I was 6lbs 7oz.

Harley- According to my dr, I will see her every 2 weeks in the 3rd trimester and every week at 36 weeks.

I think after 28 weeks, I go see my doc every 2 weeks then after 36 weeks, once per week.  How are you feeling?

by DollChina, Aug 16, 2006 12:00AM

Actually, I start seeing her every 2 weeks starting at 32 weeks.

I feel pretty good. Almost 20 weeks along and have only gained 4lbs. Still have some major heartburn and now my lower ribs are sore but I will survive. How are you??? Counting down the weeks? :)

I am doing good, I will start my 3rd trimester tomorrow,  Actually, counting down the days, 91 days before I see Gavin.  I have gained 16-17 lb so far and am not too happy about it.  But, hey what can you say, it's all worth it at the end.
My rib cage hurts too.  I sncak all day since I can't eat very much at one setting anymore, otherwise I feel miserable!

I am 31 weeks now and I'm going to start seeing my dr. every two weeks and starting week 36, I'll see her every week.  I, too, have terrible heartburn (better than it was 2nd trimester) and back aches.  It's strange that my back aches so badly.  I only gained 16 lbs so far.

It depends what ur eating aswell, if your eating alot of fatty things then the weight wont be reflective for definate. And if ur lucky like u said it will only be a few pounds (wish that was me!) But I know in the last weeks what u eat really does count cos they start piling on the fat. I went mad on icecream in the last couple of weeks befre my eldest and he came out heavier than guessed. My youngest I tried to be good, but he was early and was 5lb2, so I guess if he was term he would of been about the same as my first. Anyway as long as u eat healthy and as properly as u can if ur feeling sick the baby should be a good weight.

All the best with ur pregnancy! :-)

with my ds i gained 26 lbs and he weighed 8lbs 2oz so i am pretty sure it doesn't matter

by jgirl34, Aug 16, 2006 12:00AM
I dont think it has anything to do with that. I gained 50 with my first she was 7lbs 4oz my next i gained 50lbs and he was 7lbs 14 oz and then my youngest was 2 1/2 weeks early I gained 50 with him as well and he was 7lbs 6oz and this baby I have only gained 16lbs and I'm almost 37 weeks and they're saying she is going to be somewhere between 8.5-10lbs! So yeah lol I don't think it has anything to do with it. My case, the more I gined the smaller they were and now that I haven't gained anything I have a big baby due! :)

by stephd, Aug 16, 2006 12:00AM
I just read somewhere yesterday to be exact that you can gain alot of weight and have a small baby or you can gain a small amount and have a big baby.  So I dont think that the weight you gain has anything to do with what your baby will weigh.  For example, I gained 50 lbs with DS and he weighed an average 7lbs 4oz.  Hope this helps you.  I am by far hoping this time around that I do not gain that much!  LOL!

by have 2 kids, Aug 16, 2006 12:00AM
I don't think your weight gain reflects how big the baby will be.
With my 1st I gained 35 lbs and she weighed 5 lbs 15 oz full term.
My 2nd I gained 17 lbs and he weighed 6lbs 6oz and was 3 wks early.

by girlybuff, Aug 16, 2006 12:00AM
I'm 36 weeks along and I've only gained 23 pounds.  I go to a high risk specialist and they're able to give me the baby's  weight every 2 weeks.  She's over 7 pounds already so I don't think there is any correlation.

by emcy2, Aug 16, 2006 12:00AM
Your growing baby will only take what he/she needs, if you are not eating enough the baby will absorb nutrients directly from you/your body.
Its awful having to worry about weight gain in pregnancy, I have yo yo dieted for the past 20 years and now I am trying to relax about my weight.
I put on lots of weight in the first 4 months but now I am finding it dificult to eat large portions and my weight just seems to be at the front where baby is.
good luck

I don't think weight has much to do with how big your baby will be.  I gained 22 lbs and had a 7 lb, 7 oz baby.  A friend of mine gained 44 lbs and had a 6lb baby.  So it really depends on your body.  As long as the doctor tells you the amnio fluids, umbilical cord, and placenta are normal there is nothing to worry about.

by ange800, Aug 16, 2006 12:00AM
I gained 6kg whatever that is in pounds and had a 8lb 9oz baby at 39weeks but had gd as well but came out lighter after I had the baby than what I was when I first was pregnant. Everyone is different and gains a different amount.

by sadinak, Aug 16, 2006 12:00AM
i gained 90 lbs, and my dd weighed 6 lbs 4 oz and she was 2 weeks early, i could see where that it is true on the weight gain.  just hope all goes well.

by l_sugar_mama_l, Aug 16, 2006 12:00AM
I am expected to have between an 8 and 9 lb baby (I am 37 weeks)  And I have only gained 13 pounds so far.  My husband was a big baby I believe it is genetics...  Atleast I am blaming him for it. :D

by adrianas_mama, Aug 16, 2006 12:00AM
Myself I gained about 20lbs with my daughter, and I lost about 40 altogether, if that makes sense. I ended up weighing less that what I started...so obviously the weight gain was minimal. I was all belly, pretty much, and she ended up weighing 8lbs, 10oz, 20 inches long! I really dont think it matters overall. And about the OB visits....for me it was once a month til about 6 months, every 2 weeks til about 8, once a week for the last 3 weeks or so. :-) I have a question, also. Im new to this site, and I am having a hard time with some of the terms...DH, DS, DD...I know in some effect they are husband, son, daughter...but Im just confused. lol The other shortened terms as well.

by mandymoo1983, Aug 16, 2006 12:00AM

I am 36.5 weeks yesterday and my due date is 9/9/06.  Yesterday dr.'s visit, Dr. said my baby is measured at 39 weeks and scheduled for U/S next week.  What does it mean 39 weeks instead of 36.5 weeks? Is it normal for the baby 2.5 weeks larger than due date? I am not diabety. Thanks.

I gained only 13 pounds and I just had an sonogram and my little girl is already 8 pounds and I still have a week and two days... so what the baby weight is will not be by how much weight you gain.. don't worry.. just as long as it's healthy that's all.. congrat's and good luck on your baby...

by cyndy_07, Aug 04, 2007 12:26AM
i gained 72lbs with my first and he was 8.6lbs. gained 25lbs with the second and son weighed 9.11lbs. gained 13lbs with the 3rd and he was 9.11lbs. this is my 4th and im 33wks4d and i have gained 8lbs...doc said this baby will be another 9 pounder. oh! my sis-in-law gained tons weight and her daughter (born today) weighed 7lbs...so i guess it really doesn't matter....best of luck with your baby and your weight

Do you think if you eat alot of bad foods when you are pregnant your baby will tend to have a high birth weight.  I had a 10lb 41/2 pound baby and my sister in law is pregnant and she told her doctor that she did not want to have that big of a baby.  And her doctor told her not to eat bad foods.

I gained 25 pounds and he was 9 pounds heavy. I ate pretty healthy. I believe most of it is genetics...

by pertykitty, Aug 19, 2007 10:26PM
you cant make a baby smaller or larger, nor should you ever try to do so.  this is an old thread, over a year.  that poster hasnt been here so its pointless to continue this thread toward her.
