weight loss while bfing....

by dbestone, Mar 23, 2008 10:40AM
well i had my ds via c-section on March 5th, and ive been bfing. once i became active again i noticed the lbs dropping very quickly. less than 3 weeks after delivery, and im back at my prepregnancy weight(i gained 33lbs while preggo). im wondering how safe this is. on top of it all, i have no appetite. i take my prenatal pills, but im wondering if thats ok for the baby? he had a 2 week check up and he weighed a whole pound more from his weight when he was discharged, so im sure he's eating properly. in fact the dr mentioned that 1lb in 2 weeks may be too much gained.
i know its common to lose weight while bfing, but how fast, and how much is normal? can my lack of appetite cause concern beings that im bfing? his ped didnt seem too concerned, she just gave me a RX for multivitamins for him. can anyone share some experiences???

also forgot to ask.... how much weight should my ds be gaining? im wondering why his ped said 1lb in 2 weeks is too much. i feed on demand, so why would his weight gain be a problem?

I'm so jealous.  I've been breast feeding also but my weight doesn't seem to be changing much after the initial drop. Pregreggo I was around 122 to 125lbs and right now I'm around 135 to 137 lbs. There is no way I can fit into my pregreggo clothes right now.  I haven't been working out but I do take him for a walk everyday.  I need to start making the walks longer.

Have you been working out or is it just falling off on its own?  Well I sure the not eating helps.  I've been eating a lot.  Too many girl scout cookies.  :)

You do still have a gut right??  If you say you don't, i might have to off myself :)  Just kidding of course.

my son was born at 8lbs 1 ounce. im also breastfeeding and we took im to the doctors last week so he was 3 weeks old, and he was 9lbs 10.5 ounces! I think thats so much! i dont kno if its right but the doctors didnt seemed to be botherd by it. they thought it was great for breastfeeding.

i have been also loosing my appitie. i dont know why but a lot of the time im just not hungry.

lol....i still have that pouch. i never had a 6 pack before pregnancy, so its basically the same. as for working out....i dont. the most i do is walk around the house. i think the main thing is my lack of appetite, in addition to the bfing. i would love to maintain this weight instead of going up or down. my goal is now my tummy. after i get the ok to exercise after my c-section, i'll work on it. a little word of advice......lay off the girl scout cookies..lol

well it seems as if our boys are in the same boat. by the time my ds goes for his 3 week checkup, his weight gain should be in the same area of Dominic. i guess when i go back for his next checkup i'll get into depth more of why she thought his gain was brought to my attention. so your eating has been lacking also? i guess its common. i do remember the same thing with my dd 6 years ago.

yeah my eatting has be lacking ( i think a lot!) sometimes i will only want to eat maybe when i wake up and then the middle of the night. ill try and make myself eat because he needs the calories. but i dont kno why.

i lost weight exactly like you describe. i had no appetite and at one poitn was losing over a pound a day. some of my food passed through completely undigested and recognizable in it's original form (tmi, i know). my dr said it was normal and due to hormones.

as for baby, mine was born early so she was tiny. the doctors wanted her to gain 1/2 pound a week. for over a month she averaged a pound a week, so i am sure your baby is fine. it will level off in a few weeks. congrats on doing such a great job and on the weight loss. by the way, after a couple months the appetite returned and i stopped losing weight. it kinda just leveled off.

I did the same thing as well, all of the weight just dropped instantly. :) Don't worry the appetitie returns lol.

NO such thing as too much weight gain for a nursing baby, shame on your doc for saying such a thing.

You really do need to eat something every few hours. I was really fond of Boost nutritional supplement shakes for when my appetite was low, which was often during the first few months PP.

I always lost my pregnancy weight super fast. My first gained over 2 lbs in 10 days, he left the hospital at 7 lbs 15 ounces at 2 days old, at his checkup at 12 days old, he was 10lbs 4 ounces and continued to gain quickly.

Oh god! I've been eating a ton of girl scout cookies! My dd will be 2 weeks tomorrow. I'm down 22 pounds. I only gained 27 but I still have 60 to go from b4 I got pregnant. I sure hope this nursing helps to lose some weight but between the gs cookies and eating all day today because of Easter I don't see it happening this week!lol
