white matter on brian

by 5vikefans, Mar 30, 2005 12:00AM
Hi ! I am concerned about my 8 year old son he has white matter on his brian and is loosing skills. His Neurologist has just upped his Meds for his siezures in hopes that it help him regain some of his skills.  Is this a sign of some sort of brian disease? They are just now comparing his MRI scans from a year ago to one that was taken 5 years ago. Should we be wrorried and should we request a new MRI ? Is this a common practice to wait that long to compare the two ? 5 years ago we were told that he had just 2 spots of white matter, the other scan showed several new spots scattered all over. but they never compared the two to each other . We are very confused about the whole thing . Please let us know what you think.
Sincerly ,
Dawn

I have never heard of any of it, and hope you find the answer you are looking for. I will pray for your son, and your whole family. Good Luck!

By all means get your questions answered!!
The brain is the main organ of life which controls all functions
Ask away for results of xrays, blood work, whatever he has had done.
He is your son and you have all rights to be informed of his care, etc....
Sending hugs and kisses to your son (have a 8 yr old dd)
Saying prayers for all of you in this worry some time
Good Luck

white matter can be a good thing, it covers nerves in the brain, it acts as a cushion and make the nerves work faster, the seizures could be moving the white matter around from its position. Lets hope thats all it is. Keep on them girl drive them hard for answers, and eventually you will get them. You snd your son are in my prayers.

I think your doctor is doing a bad job of explaining things to you. EVERY brain is made up of white matter (cell axons that are covered with a fatty substance called myelin which speeds up nerve cell transmission) and gray matter (cell bodies). There is no such thing as a normal brain without white matter. Ask your doctor to clarify or find a new one that will spend more than 30 seconds explaining whats going on with your child to you. Good luck.
