A gal in my church is in her early 30's, expecting their first child.  She told me yesterday that she had some bleeding show up on the ultrasound.  The doctor said its common but could lead to miscarriage.  He told her to take it easy.  Her question is:  How easy is easy?  We know she shouldn't be shingling any roofs, but should she be flat on her back all day?
Dear Christine:
When a patient has bleeding, whether visible or seen on ultrasound, we suggest reduced physical activity. The lady can look after her personal needs; she can be out of bed around the house; she can do ordinary light activities such as simple food preparation. She should not engage in strenous activity: heavy housework including laundry and vacuuming; any violent, jarring activity (jumping on a trampoline; horseback riding); and pelvic rest (no sexual intercourse).
This prescription is for 48 hours. With obvious bleeding, it is easy to judge the change. With an ultrasound identified bleeding, one must repeat the ultrasound to know what is happening. Hence, contact with the treating physician to have a follow up plan is important.
