Antibotics

I have been taking arythomycian to clear up severe acne on my face and I am trying to become pregnant - If by any any chance I do become pregnant while taking this medication, will it harm the fetus in any way?  I understand that I must stop taking this medication as soon as I know that I am pregnant.  But, should I stop taking it now and just deal with these ugly boils/bumps on my face until I become pregnant?

Hi Brenda,
Erythromycin is listed as a Category B drug for pregnancy.  This means that animal studies show no effect on a fetus and there are no trials on pregnant humans. Most studies do not allow studies on pregnant women.  Many medications we use in pregnancy are category B. You are safe to continue this while you are trying to get pregnant.

Key word: drugs in pregnancy-erythromycin
