Bakers cysts

by A-Carlson, Oct 05, 1998 12:00AM
  Dear DRs.,
My one year old son has been diagnosed through xray and sonogram as having a bakers or popatile cyst behind his knee.  The physician said that we could either leave it alone and it may go away by itself, or we could have it drained.  Are there any reprocussions to leaving it alone?  What would be our best course of action?  We do not want to cause our son any unnecessary pain, but want to do what is best for him.  Thank you for your time.

Dear A. Carlson,
Baker's and popliteal cysts are NOT the same thing. Baker's cysts are very rare in 1 year old children. But if it truly is a Baker's cysts, no treatment is necessary and it will go away on it's own in 6-12 months.
Baker's cysts will not show up on xray, but on a sonagram, they will tranilluminate in a certain way.
Other cystic lesions may mimic Baker's cysts, therefore , an evaluation by a pediatric orthopedic surgean is necessary.
