Beta Strept!!!!!

by David__0, Feb 09, 1999 12:00AM

My 6 month pregnant wife came back from her check up today and was diagnosed with Beta Strept. I can't find anything on the web about this bacteria. She is told that if this went un-noticed there would be a 30% chance of the newborn developing complications that could lead to early death but properly diagnosed, she needs to pump up on I.V. anti-biotics during delivery to reduce the risk to the baby. Any info greatly apreciated.

Dear David:
Group B streptococcus is a common bacterium that colonizes 15-20% of pregnant women. One half of babies born to these ladies also become colonized and some will develop severe infection that can cause death. Identification of the organism and treatment with antibiotics in labor reduces the risk significantly.
