Coxsackie virus, first trimester

by Mat__0, Nov 27, 1998 12:00AM

What are the effects of coxsackie virus on fetal development in the first trimester?
Dear Matt:
There is no good evidence that coxsackie virus affects fetal development. All infections associated with fever can contribute to miscarriage.
There is a general warning in standard medical texts that coxsackie infection can be associated with fetal infection and anomalies. I reported this as an answer to a question several months ago. When I checked today with my Maternal Fetal Medicine colleagues, they found the available evidence unconvincing.
Keywords: coxsackie, fetal development
