Cyst

Cyst

I detected a small round bump(approx.1 millimeter diameter) on the upper lip,
right below the nostril of my newborn baby. When I press down on it, I can feel
a hard lump under the skin. He is about 3 weeks old now, and the bump has
tripled in size. It has some redness to it but doesn't seem to be hurting him.
I took him to the doctor today, and she said it looked like a cyst, probably
sebacious. She said the only way to treat it is by surgical removal, which she
did not recommend at this time because he's only 3 weeks old, and it will also
leave a scar on his face. She can't tell me for sure what that bump was.
My concern is the rate at which this bump has been growing, and the fact that
it could obstruct his breathing since it's right in front of his right nostril.
Is it possible to find out if it really is a cyst, or perhaps something else.
I can certainly wait until the baby is older to remove the cyst, but what if it
keeps growing at this fast rate? Wouldn't it be harder on him to get it out when
it's much bigger? I'm very worried because he's so very young.
  Thank you.

Dear May :
The way you describe it, it sounds like a small hemangioma ( a collection of blood vessels) but it's difficult to assess without visualizing it. If you are still concerned ,talk to a Dermatologist about the possibilities of this being a dermoid cyst or not.Dermoid cysts don't harm the baby and If it's in front of one nostril , it will not obstruct breathing as the other nostril is still patent.
