Early Delivery

by Paty__0, Mar 16, 1999 12:00AM

My 20yr old daughter is in her 27th week of prgnancy, she was rushed to the hospital 2 days ago. The DR. says she has to stay in the hospital until she delivers. The DR's just say that's the way it is. She is dialated 5 cm, she's tilted in the bed and can not get up for any reason. I JUST WANT TO KNOW HOW ABNORMAL OR NORMAL THIS IS, MAYBE A % RATE. We are very scared.

Dear Patty:
At 27 weeks gestation, the outlook for the baby in a neonatal intensive care unit is 80% survival without disability. Each week that the baby can stay inside the uterus imcreases the likelihood for a good outcome. The only therapies available to treat pre-term labor and cervical dilation are bed rest and drugs to quiet the uterine contactions. Three-quarters of patients will deliver within 3 days and 90% will deliver within one week.
