Hi
I became pg for the fist time this past cycle with the use of Chlomid. My husband and I had tried for 10 mos. prior. My cycles were always irregular and I knew that sometimes I did ovulate but sometimes I didn't. I was on 50 mg of Chlomid and got pg. 4 weeks after conception, I had an U/S that showed nothing in the uterus and it was a suspected
ectopicEctopic pregnancy. I had some soreness and pain in my right side as well as light brown
spottingVaginal bleeding between periods.
Could the Chlomid have caused this? I realize there are many reasons why an
ectopicEctopic pregnancy could happen.... since this was my

Dear Patty:
I am unaware of an association between fertility drug therapy and
ectopicEctopic pregnancy pregnancy. Although tubal damage is the widely recognized association with ectopic pregnancy, the disease occurs in patients with no risk factors (Traffic accidents occur to people who have a clean record and were paying attention.
Clomiphene has been available for 30+ years. We have had lots of time to discover associations.
Keywrods: clomiphene, ectopic pregnancy

My Doctor very generally eluded that ovary stimulation drugs may be the cause and I had read something similiar in the book 'taking control of your fertility' Since I didn't have much info..I thought maybe there was more out there on this.
Of course, I'll have this conversation with my Doctor once I could start to try again...but was frustrated if Chlomid could be the cause (it helped me to become pg but also inhibited the ability for the egg to make it to the uterus)
Thanks!

Dear Patty:
It is easy in books which do not require that one reference (back up) a statement with some fact to make associations. Infertility drugs are commonly prescribed to patients who have inefficiency becoming pregnant. One reasone for inefficiency is tubal disease and it is not surprizing that patients with tubal problems get ectopic pregnancies. An association, not cause and effect.
In 1975, Dr. Leslie Iffy proposed that ectopic pregnancy was due to the fertilized egg going back into the fallopian tube with early bleeding. Some patients on clomiphene, as we are establishing the best dose of drug, may fall into the risk group Dr. Iffy described. Another association is born.
A discussion with your healthcare provider is always the best way to understand the information that is driving his/her thought process.
Good Luck.
