Effects of Dental Work and Swimming on conception

by Pati__0, Apr 01, 1999 12:00AM

I am scheduled to have some dental work done at my expected time
of ovulation in April.  Would the local anesthesia cause problems if I
  conceived at that time?
Also, does swimming in a chlorinated swimming pool during the days of
and around ovulation affect the chances of conceiving.  We will be
on vacation around the time of ovulation in May and am wondering
if I should stay out of the water.
  Thanks.

Dear Patti
Neither situation should pose any problem. Even if local anesthetic or chlorine caused birth defects (no convincing evidence suggests this), two things to consider in your case:
     A. The "exposures" you describe will not produce any appreciable systemic (blood) levels of the agents.
     B. Exposures at ovulation/conception do not cause birth defects since the conceptus has not even begun to differentiate (develop organ systems, etc.)
