FEVER

FEVER

Our son is 2.5 years old two nights ago his fever was 103.8 for about
seven hours. He could not keep the tyonol in his stomach long enough        to bring down the fever. His fever got better that morning I took him to
a doctor . when they checked his fever I noticed that there reading was     1.8 degrees higher than our digital read.when i got home we checked
rectal  and then with the digital ear scan thermometer and there was a
1.8 degree difference. we will from now on us the recta l, but my question is
his fever that night was actually 105.6 . he seems okay now but do we need to take him somewhere to see if the fever  done any damage or caused any long term problems that might now be corrected.
                                                                                     thanks

Dear Sammy hicks :
The fever state that may produce consequences is called hyperthermia or an elevation of core temperature without the elevation of the hypothalamic set-point ( the hypothalamus is located in the mid-brain , one of its functions being thermo-regulation ).This situation is limited to drug interactions , heat strokes and certain endocrinological disorders . A person would present with a high fever , dry skin , hallucinations , delirium , dilation of the pupils of the eyes, muscle stiffness and breakdown. This may continue to  more serious features like coma , seizures , bleeding tendency and a generalized organ system shut down .
There is little evidence that low-grade or moderate fever would be harmful , except in cases of status Epilepticus ( prolonged seizures ) , patients with poor cardiac , pulmonary or cerebral function. There is also little evidence that cooling or decreasing the temperature with antipyretics has any clinical benefit , except in the already mentioned situations ( e.g. , a child who is prone to have seizures with fever or has febrile seizures ). Antipyretics may help reduce constitutional symptoms like chills, headache and muscle aches.
When taking a temperature , many external as well as internal variables have to be taken in consideration , including the time of day the temp. was taken ( the body temperature is slightly higher in the afternoon ), age , environmental temperature , clothing
