First Trimester - bleeding is it normal???

by Brenda__0, Aug 02, 1998 12:00AM

I am 4 weeks pregnant and I am spotting.
I called my doctor and got no answers.
  what could this mean???
I have no pain and the bleeding stops if I keep my feet up
  and relax is this normal????
Dear Elizabeth:
Approximately 1/4 ladies experience bleeding in early pregnancy. One half of these experience no ill effect from the bleeding and often the cause remains mysterious. The commonest explanation for bleeding that then clears is "implantation bleeding": as the afterbirth establishes contact with blood vessels to nourish the pregnancy, there is some leak (much like a pot that overflows as you add the vegetables). The problem self-corrects without harm.
Bleeding without cramping discomfort and bleeding that comes and goes is less worrisome than when there are other symptoms.
Rest is a traditional recommendation: bleeding usually does decrease when ladies are "off their feet."
Keywords: early pregnancy; bleeding
