High HCG 2nd trimester

by Lorelei__0, Feb 24, 1999 12:00AM

Due to Maternal age of 36 I had a triple screen that was "negative" for Downs and tube defects at 17 weeks.  20 week US confirmed this and confirmed the age of fetus. At next DR. visit I was told the HCG level was slightly high  (2.5) and told to take Baby asprin daily.  The DR. mentioned possible high blood pressure, placental problems and something I forgot.  I can not find any more info in the library or on www other than hydatitiform mole, which seems to have been ruled out by the US.  What are these mid pregnancy high levels used predict?  Any info apreciated.

Dear Lorelei:
You are telling me that you had a normal triple screen but your hCG level is elevated. An elevated hCG level would be indication to perform an amniocentesis.
Hydatidiform mole, multiple pregnancy are the commonest reasons for a high hCG. Anything that gives placental enlargement, such as diabetes and eyrthroblastosis, can raise the hCG level. Some patients with collagen vascular disease, such as lupus erythematosis, can have elevated hCG level.
Keywords: high hCG, second trimester hCG
