Dear Shannon:
A gestational sac can have a distorted shape if there are irregularities in the shape of the uterine cavity (for example, uterine fibroids) or if there has been compression by an adjacent pregnancy (lost twin) that is not developing, bleeding adjacent to the pregnancy, or if the sac is beginning to collapse because the early placenta is not developing in a normal fashion. The caution that this may be a prelude to miscarriage is appropriate, but only time will answer the question. The observation of a fetal pole with heartbeat is reassuring and carries an high (90%) good outlook for a pregnancy.-
