Is diet soda safe to drink during pregnancy?

If it is, how much per day would be safe?  I am a borderline gestational diabetic and crave soda.  I don't want to drink any sugar drinks naturally and just wonder if diet soda would be safe.
  Thanks!

The absolute safety of diet soft drinks is unclear during pregnancy.  We do not recommend the use of saccharin in preganacy (pregnancy) at all.  Consumption of all empty calories is strongly discouraged. Perhaps a glass of water or juice would better suit the nutritional needs of you and your baby.  Consult your physician/nurse midwife for more specifics regarding this topic.
