Miscarriage - Infection

A few weeks ago I had a miscarriage in my 18th week.  The doctor said I had amnionitis.  I have not been able to find any information on this.  I would like to know how a person gets this, how it can be prevented, and what is the likelihood of it happening again. I never had an amniocentisis.  Any information would be greatly appreciated. Thank you.
Dear Man V.
Amnionitis means infection of the membranes surrounding the pregnancy. This can occur from generalized infections of mother or from localized infections in the vagina and cervix. A common organism is group B streptococcus.
This is unrelated to amniocentesis, collecting fluid from around the baby.
The likelihood for recurrence depends on whether a cause was identified for the recent infection: some infections such as toxoplasmosis will lead to antibodies in mother and low risk of a second infection. Toxoplasmosis comes from handling kitty litter: avoiding this in a second pregnancy would eliminate infection posssibility. Streptococcus can recur in future pregnancies, but can be identifed by culture and treated.
