Ovarian Cyst in 1st Trimester

My wife, who is about 7weeks  pregnant, just returned from the hospital after suffering mild spotting and cramps.  An ultrasound showed a healthy heartbeat, which normally reduces the chance of miscarriage greatly, but the attendant said that she noticed a small cyst on her ovary but not to worry because it was a normal occurance, and these cysts provide needed chemicals and/or hormones to the uterus.  We have never heard of this and are curious to find out if this is true?

dear Joe:
Following ovulation, a corupus luteum forms on the ovary to produce progesterone tat prepares the uterine lining to be a suitable nesting place. Pregnancy hCG rescues the corpus luteum so that it continues to produce progesterone through the first 8-10 weeks of pregnancy. The corpus luteum can have a cystic appearance by ultrasound examination.
