Ovulation after the pill

Ovulation after the pill

I have been off the pill for 4 months after having been on it for 6 years.  My husband and I are trying to get pregnant.  The trouble is, since I went off the pill, I have only had 1 period which was 4 weeks late.  I was supposed to get my period (based on 28 day cycle) last 1 week ago.  I did have some very, very light brownish discharge but never got my period.  I am assuming that I am not pregnant becuase I had the brownish discharge.  Should I take a pregnancy test?  And, how long should it take before my cycle is normal again?  Should I see my doctor?
Dear Christy:
Following use of birth control pills, 80% of women have resumed menstrual cycles by 3 months and 95% of women are cycling by 6 months. If the cycle has not been established at this time, physician consultation is appropriate.
In any woman who is attempting pregnancy, an abnormal menstrual period is an indication to do a pregnancy test. Some women will conceive and have some bleeding that they mistake for a menstrual period.
