Pediatric pyloric stenosis with milk protein/food allergies with inflamed nasal

by Miriam-Schaefer, Jan 26, 1999 12:00AM

My daughter 7mths weighs 15lbs. Has constant rhinitis wchich often goes into her chest since 4mths.  Had severe allergic reactions to all formulas(including breast milk) from colic, eczema, severe itching, projectile vomitus, stools ranging from green diarhea (diarrhea) to black pellets with anal fissures.  Her stomach gets tight and hard after eating, she cries through the night choking and with coaghing and labored breathing.  The Otolaryngologist stated her problem is GI related.  I have taken her to the emergency room and asked them to admit her to observe her behavior.  I have been referred to Pediactric GI and an allergist.  I can not get appoinments until March or April.
what can I do in the meantime to give my child comfort.  She often has black circles under her eyes from lack of sleep.  she has to sleep at an angle.  It is unbelievable. Also she maintained the same weight since 5months, she gained 1pd at 7mths, then lost it in a period of 2 days.
I am not a physician but I have researched and I believe my daughter has the problems listed above.  Please advise.
  Thanks

Dear Miriam :
What medications has your daughter been on since the onset of the congestion in her nose , her coughing , her vomiting , her eczema.
Have you been following up with her primary pediatrician or doctor , he/she may have a better general picture than the specialists and may help with a closer follow-up if you need to wait for 3-4 months for GI . What type of milk is she on now ?
The way you're describing her problem is : continuous, every hour , throughout the day of coughing , vomiting and congestion . Does she ever stop vomiting  or having congestion ? How many hours does she sleep a day . How much food does she take ( again , her primary doctor can help with the evaluation of how many calories she's taking , is her diet adequate , is she losing it in her stool depending on how much she has diarrhea ) . Has she had any stool examinations . Has any doctor seen her vomiting or having diarrhea or pellets . Has the stool been tested for blood . Has her doctor brought up the subject of reflux causing vomiting. Has she had a barium study for her upper gastrointestinal system ( called an upper GI study ). Although pyloric stenosis is not a diagnosis to think of at 7 months of age , most upper GI anatomical variations can be diagnosed by an upper GI study .
I hope you can answer some of the above questions , while making sure you arrange an appointment with your daughter's pediatrician to plot her weight on the graph and compare her growth pattern to previous records .
Thank you for your question
