Dear Susan:
Polyps are tags of tissue, ususally benign. They are found by inspecting the tissue, just as a mole is found by looking at the skin.
They are removed is they cause annoyance to the patient or irritation and bleeding.
When a tissue is removed, is can cause discomfort that usually is short lived and treatable with simple pain medications.
The cause of polyps is not understood: medicine often does not know why things occur.
