Possible Miscarriage/Ectopic - Need info on HCG levels?

  I am 6 weeks pregnant and had some spotting Monday (really light) so they did lab work to see what my HCG level was - it was 4500.  Today I went in for the same test and it was only at 4200.  I have to go in Friday again to see what the level is then.  I know that this drop indicates a possible miscarriage, but is there a possibility that the level could double as it should on Friday?  Has anyone had a level drop and then double as expected which resulted in a normal pregnancy?  Also, I have not had any spotting for the last 24 hours.  Is this a positive sign?  Please respond if you have any information.  Thank you.

Any laboratory test can be misleading: hence, the decision to do another measure will define the trend.
If the values are accurate, a plateau in the hCG rise is unlikely to reverse itself.
