I developed pre-eclampsia in my 8th month. By my 36th week my doctor induced labor using pitocin and magnesium. I wound up having a c-section. About an hour or so after delivery I began loosing a lot of blood and my blood pressure dropped to 70/30. Was this dangerously low? What type of treatment is given for this? I lost so much blood I had to have 2 blood transfusions... What are the chances of this happening again with another pregnancy?
Dear Sharon:
The treatment for bleeding following delivery is fluid therapy, ususally intravenous salt solutions, and bleed replacement. The cause of the bleeding is simultaneously corrected: most common, the uterus relaxes and is stimulatedto contract with a medication named pitocin (it is the natural hormone, oxytocin). Less often, a blood vessel needs to be resutured.
A blood pressume of 70/30 is low. If it were not corrected, you would faint if you tried to stand up.
Pre-eclampsia is most common during first pregnancies: only 7% of women with this diagnosis are in their second pregnancy. Postpartum bleeding is usually an isolated occurrence.
