Preganancy following miscarriage

Preganancy following miscarriage

15 months ago I had a miscarriage at 5 weeks gestation.  It was preceded by violent cramping pains and elevated temperature. I was scanned and my uterus was inlarged although no fetus was seen,my blood count was initially good but it had started to fall three days later and I started to bleed heavily losing the baby four days after the initial pains began.  I was scanned again a week later and my uterus had returned to normal.  I was treated for an infection with anti biotics after the miscarriage and Drs thought that I may have had an ectopic pregnancy but could not be sure.  I bled for around 5 weeks.  I am now pregnant again and I am frightened.  Will this happen again ?  Is it normal to have some mild cramping pains in pregnancy ?  Is there anything I can do to help myself ?
Dear Celia:
Miscarriage is unfortunately very common: 1/3 of all pregnancies do not go forward. Women who have had one miscarriage have NO increased likelihood to have a second miscarriage. Infection/bleeding can be issues of concern for easily becomining pregnant: since you are pregnant, that concern can be set aside.
Ladies who have had one ectopic pregnancy have increased risk for a second ectopic pregnancy: however, this diagnosis was never established for you. Blood hCG pattern, looking for the rise that occurs every 2-3 days is the earliest test that can be done and then an ultrasound study is the definitive test to establish a normal pregnancy.
