Pregnancy & an Ovarian Cyst.

by Melisa__0, Oct 09, 1998 12:00AM

Is it possible to get pregnant while having a 5-6cm ovarian cyst?
I got 2 different responses from OB's.  One saying 'Yes', the other one
saying 'The hormone levels produced by the cyst won't let the ovulation
  happen.'
I am pregnant and while trying to figute out my due date, can't seem to
get an answer: Whether my last priod was only about two weeks after the
one before (even though my cycle is usually 30 days), or whether it was
just the bloody discharge from a burst cyst (it definitely did rupture
  that day).
In the latter case, my period before the cyst ruptured is the
one I should start my count down from, but it would mean I got pregnant
while having an ovarian cyst.  Thus my question above.
  Please help,
  thank you very much.
Dear Melissa:
Pregnancy is dated from Last NORMAL Menstrual period. Thus, initially, most physicians would count from the normal period, ignore the bleeding that you call "a burst cyst" and then use ultrasound measurements of baby growth to "revise" the due date, if necessary.
A 5-6 cm ovarian cyst may or may not make hormones. It is very possible to continue regular ovulation and menstrual cycles with a cyst of this size and with ovulation, one can conceive. You apparently prove that this is true because you have become pregnant.
