Pregnant Again After Miscarriage 6 weeks ago

by dc__0, Sep 30, 1998 12:00AM

I am worried sick.  My doctor said to wait one menstrual cycle following
my miscarriage 6 weeks ago.  While my husband and I were devestated by
our loss (we already have 2 healthy children) and desperately want a
child, we agreed to wait.  The problem is, I think I am pregnant again and
I have not yet had a period following my miscarriage.
What do I do?  What are the potential complications and is it possible to
  have a health pregnancy?
  Thanks.
Dear dc:
The average time to menstrual flow following a miscarriage is 6 weeks. However, it takes 12 weeks before 9/10 women have had a period and it can take 6 months to have that first period.
A positive pregnancy test and rising levels of hCG will confirm whether or not you are pregnant. I you are, your chances for a normal pregnancy are not different from any other lady.
We ask patients to wait for the first normal menstrual period to; 1. Give the best dating for the pregnancy (we date from the last NORMAL menstrual flow); 2. A small number of women have an abnormal first cycle (short luteal phase) that increases the risk for miscarriage and we wish to avoid a second sadness.
