Prenatal Vitamins

by Luane__0, Feb 20, 1999 12:00AM

I am currently week 10 (since LMP) of pregnancy.  My OB told me that I can
stop taking prenatal vitamins and that I could have stopped after week 7. Is
this standard procedure?  Would you advise to continue taking them?

Dear Luanne:
Prenatal vitamins are recommended throughout pregnancy and the first 6 weeks following birth. In breast feeding moms, they are often continued until lactation is ceased. The purpose is to provide supplemental vitamins that would not be easily obtained from a diet that allows one to control weight gain.
