Problems in twin pregnant

by Karin__0, Sep 09, 1998 12:00AM

Iam in my 5 month of pregnancy and I was expecting twins.
It was ok, and I have no problem. Last week as I have my control the doctor checked that one of the fetus died. All the analisis are ok and know the other fetus is ok. The doctor say to me that I must wait until the 7 month and in that moment he will make me cirgury.

I want to know, what will be your recomendation in this situation and
which problems could be for me and my actual baby.
Its ok to let the two fetus, how can the died fetus affect the other?
Dear Karin:
Death of one twin can be handled by the defense systems of the body without harm to the other baby. Equally, sometimes the uterus will begin to contract and both babies will deliver.
At 5 months into pregnancy, the living baby is too small (premature) to survive if delivered now. Thus, the recommendation to monitor the pregnancy and wait until 28 weeks when there begins to be a reasonable hope that a premature baby can survive with a good quality of life is appropriate.
This is the type of situation where consultation with a maternal fetal medicine physician  and delivery at a center that had a tertiary level newborn intensive care unit is appropriate.
