My son is 4 years old and has a high fever of 103 every month like clock work and swollen lymph nodes in his neck that lasts five days.  This has been going on for alittle over 2 years now.  His doctor has run blood tests and feels comfortable that he is just coming in contact with virus after virus,  but my son never has any other symptoms along with these fevers he gets every month.  He is home with me, his mother, and not in daycare.  We do keep a very busy schedule during the day participating in activities and skipping naps.  So, I wonder if it is possible that these fevers could be the result of fatigue?  If so,  could a fever last 5 days from skippping naps like these do every month ?  If not,  have you ever heard of anyone else having these recurring fevers and do you know what caused them ?  Any information would be greatly apppreciated.
Dear Lori,
This may sound odd...but my 8-year-old, Zachariah, and I are playing doctor so I pulled up "fevers" on the search...and your article looked interesting. He was "reading" the temperature on the toy thermometer.  I had him read your comments.  Zach runs a temperature of 101 degrees for 5-10 days at a time.  His normal temperature is 97 degrees.  He has no other symptoms at all.  But I've noticed that he usually started losing baby teeth within a few weeks of the prolonged fevers.  Also, when he was 3 months old until 6 months...when the first teeth came in...he would run high fevers too.  I don't know if this info. helps at all...I hope it will.  I hope you are able to solve this medical mystery.  Fevers can be quite difficult...since the public schools will not allow students who have a fever over 100 degrees.  I wish you the best of luck in your medical quest for answers!!!!
Lori, Our eight year old son has had recurring fevers/ nausea for the past 14 months.  They also seemed to occur monthly.  They usually spiked at about 104 and seemed to have a cyclical nature.  The fever would rise and fall maybe three or four times each day.  Each bout would last about three to four days.  Last January, on a tip from a friend of a friend whose son had similar bouts, we started giving him vitamins and herbs, (echinacea (sp?),and cat's claw.) We were amazed to see the fevers virtually dissapear... Until this last weekend.  He's now in the third day of another episode.  Not sure if this is related, but we ran out of the herbs about a month ago. His pediatrician doesn't seem overly concerned...blood, urine, stool tests all normal.  Needless to say, we quickly replenished our herb supply.  I've scoured the medical literature out there but there seems to be no disease with these recurrent fever symptoms.  Let us know if you come up with anything.  Pat and Deanne

Look up PFAPA I think that is the initials. My 3 has the same thing going on. Not to sound crazy or anything, but this all started for us after the last MMR shot not to leave out that every administration of the vaccine she would get a fever of 103-105. I don't necessarily think it is from the shot, but the timing really bothered me especially until I ran across the PFAPA. Our ped is doing some things to look into what's going on but also dismissed her "clock work fevers" as viruses until I showed him MY logs of her fevers and pointed out that I have become extremely irritated!
