My doctor has been observing an ovarian cyst on my left ovary for
a few months.  I have had two ultrasounds.  The first ultrasound showed
the cyst to be about 4-5mm.  The second ultrasound showed that the cyst
had increased in size to 6-7mm.  It seems that it is a corpus leutum cyst,
that appears to have no malignant qualities.  I was scheduled for surgery
but my blood pregnancy test showed low levels of the pregnancy hormone.
What are the risk and treatment of a cyst during pregnancy? I miscarried
in February.  This recent pregnancy was not planned, but we do most
definitely want to have this child.
Dear Jennifer:
An ovarian cyst 4-5 mm would be barely detectable by ultrasound: I am guessing that the cyst is cm in size.
If this is a corpus luteum (as you named it), it will resolve by itself.
When ovarian cysts need treatment in pregnancy, obstetricians prefer to do surgery between the 14th and 20th week from last menstrual period. The risk of miscarriage during this window in time is small and the uterus has not grown to a size that interferes with access to the ovaries. The organ systems have now formed and there is low risk for any malformations from medical treatment.
All surgery carries risks of infection, bleeding, and drug reactions. In pregnancy, there is always a risk of miscarriage.
