My wife, who is about 7weeks  pregnant, just returned from the hospital after suffering mild spotting and cramps.  An ultrasound showed a healthy heartbeat, which normally reduces the chance of miscarriage greatly, but the attendant said that she noticed a small cyst on her ovary but not to worry because it was a normal occurance, and these cysts provide needed chemicals and/or hormones to the uterus.  We have never heard of this and are curious to find out if this is true?

Hi, Joe,
Thought I could give you a quick answer.  This is a corpus luteum
cyst and is completely normal.  I don't know the medical jargon, but
it's what forms from whatever the egg comes out of.  During the first
10 weeks (or thereabouts) of pregnancy this produces the progesterone to sustain
the pregnancy.  After that, the placenta take over.  I had early
ultrasounds too and was told after 2 ultrasounds that I had a
dermoid cyst (a different type) and was worried.  Switched to a
different doctor, had another ultrasound, and they clearly could
see this was a corpus luteum cyst and all was fine.  Later
ultrasounds showed it was gone.
