Re: Progesterone Safety

Re: Progesterone Safety

I'm using vaginal natural Progesterone suppositories twice a day, 50mg each.  My progesterone level was not tested prior, and I don't have a luetal phase defect.  Due to light brown spotting at 4 weeks, my RE started me on them (I'm now 6 weeks).  I had spotting with my previous pregnancy on and off for the first trimester, and did not get progesterone.  I've read progesterone helping in sustaining a pregnancy under these circumstances in unproven, and I don't want to continue taking the progesterone if there are any increased risks for birth defects with this type of treatment.  Please let me know if there are any types of birth defects that my baby would have an increase risk of having with the use of progesterone suppositories through week 12 of the pregnancy.
Thank you for answering my question.

Dear MegJ
Progesterone has no known health risks for unborn babies. It is very safe for mothers: some people believe it predisposes to yeast infections, but otherwise nothing bad has been suggested.
In the past, patients have been prescribed 1000 mg/day of progesterone without harm.
The benefit of progesterone to prevent pregnancy loss is unproven.
Keywrods: progesterone, safety

I have a 6 and a half year old healthy boy.  I had progesterone injections during the first part of the pregnancy after not falling pregnant for 3 years after the miscarriage of my first ever pregnancy.  Naturally I was concerned.  I delivered my son one month before his due date. (My dates were carefully logged and I was in no doubt that they were accurate).  I have had a perfect 28-day cycle all my life but it would seem that I had a period after falling pregnant.  The Autistic Research Institute have categorized my son as semi-autistic after filling a detailed questionnaire.  A follow up questionnaire asks if I had been on an anti-miscarriage drug/progesterone.  Now I wonder if there is a proven link between such things.  Certainly no side-effects/risks were ever discussed with me during my pregnancy.  Additionally the levels were not monitored.
Does taking it for too long into pregnancy cause known problems or is this still unproven?

Hi!
During my first pregnacy I was considered at risk for miscarriage, so doctor Mettel prescrived progesterone up to the twelve week of pregnacy to avoid miscarring the baby (I was 34 years old).
Now I am in my 9th week of my second pregnancy (I am 37 years old) and my new doctor reyes wants me to take the progesterone up to the 10th week of pregnacy. I am confussed. Is it OK to take the progesterone up to the twelve week?
Thank you
Susana Williams
