I'm late by 5 days. My last period was July 18 and was due on Aug 15. I'm usually a day or two late, but now I'm worried. I took 2 home pregnancy tests and both came out negative. I have used protection - my partner uses a condom. I don't feel my period coming on? Do I wait a week or should I see a doctor?
Dear Rox:
Women who use contraception consistently and experience a delay in menstrual flow are usually having an irregular cycle. All women do this randomly and without explanation. You noted that you commonly are a couple of days "late" which I assume means your cycle is slightly longer than one month. Situations that will alter menstrual irregularity include travel, stress such as moving, changing jobs, or financial worries, illness with fever, and concern about being pregnant.
Home pregnancy tests are very reliable.
When one is one week late, a blood pregnancy test is logical.
