I have been trying to concieve for 11 months.I can feel the cervical
mucus changes (thin, clear & copious) that usually occur at day 14-15
of my normal cycle. Do these mucus changes mean that the egg is
able to be fertilized or that it is too late? The mucus lasts 2-3 days.
Dear Julie:
Prior to ovulation, estrogen stimulates the cervical mucus glands to produce thin, clear, watery, stretchable secretion that is easily prentrated by the swimming sperm. This pattern of mucus usually lasts for several days. After ovulation, the mucus becomes thick and acts as a barrier to the sperm.
The thin mucus indicates the time of the cycle when pregnancy is most likely to occur.
After 11 months, approximately 7/10 patients who are attempting pregnancy have conceived. Thus, it is logical to consult a physician to have simple tests to demonstrate ovulation, an adequate luteal (second half of cycle) phase to support early pregnancy, open fallopian tubes, and normal male factor.
Keywords: pre-ovulation mucus
